Media mapping about refugee narratives in Estonia, Latvia and Finland

From 26-27 November NGO Mondo's meeting room was filled with bright young people from Estonia, Latvia and Finland. They had done media mapping in their countries to investigate how the media has portrayed the refugee crisis and how the public has reacted to it. The participants also tried out a social media campaigns related with refugee issues in the social media.

What we have heard from discussions and presentations was that young people care about how to stop the polarization of society and how to ensure media's independence.

Activity in Estonia: Media discussion at Opinion Festival

The first public discussion about the role media has taken place! The discussion was moderated by Indrek Treufeldt (ERR) and the participants were Anna Gavronski (journalist from ERR), Meelis Süld (journalist from ERR), Aliine Lotman (NGO Mondo's communication person) and Viktoria Ladõnskaja (freelance journalist, Member of the Parliament).

About the project

Better News Media is a joint project between Mondo (Estonia), VIKES (Finland) and Humana People to People (Latvia) with the aim of raising media skills among youth and improving media ethics of journalists in order to combat racism and intolerance.

The project will organise media events with journalists from different backgrounds, trainings fro teachers, youth workers and youth and social media campaign for youth. You can find the social media content of the project with #betternewsmedia
